Responses To Death

One of the feelings that individuals go through when losing a loved one is anger. When addressing anger, one can put it as part of the grieving process. The anger is coming from a place of not being able to cope, However, there could be many shades to this anger that one needs to address.

1. One aspect to consider is the anger that one feels towards the one who is dying. In the sense that the person who is dying is leaving them and that is selfish on their part. The individual feels lighter to put the blame on the person who is dying, that is an escape for him.

2. Anger towards the situation. Individuals who have no control over the situation usually displace their anger on the situation that has happened. So, the anger is towards the situation and what pain the situation caused.

3. Anger towards God. God is seen as an ever-loving deity. How can God cause this kind of sadness? That means God doesn’t care for me or love me. Displacing anger in this way helps the person cope with the situation of a loved one dying.

Anger is also in the fact that this shouldn’t have happened to them. There is an expectation that bad things shouldn’t happen to them so it becomes hard for them when they face death.

Let’s look at how this individual can help:

Emotional:

  • Hearing the individual out is crucial. Allowing them to express their emotions of anger is a healthy way for them to heal. Encouraging them to meet people and talk about their experiences with different people will in turn help them celebrate the memories with the loved one.

  • Allow the individual to verbalize their anger in terms of poetry or sports. Allowing them to take out their anger in something that they enjoy will help them to actively work through their anger.

  • Confronting the anger is also important. So regular counselling sessions will help the individual verbalize his thoughts and emotions which is a healthy outlet for the individual.

Physical:

  • Be engaged with exercise. This is will help to release bodily functions in a normal way. Daily activity will help to regularize the body and its functions in a way that will help the individual to get to a healthy emotional place.

  • Meet up with friends on a regular basis. This too will help the individual do things which are different and helpful for the individual to express emotions.
