Walking the lone road!

When we talk about the loneliness, we somehow always attribute it to children and adults but the group that is mostly affected by it is the elderly. This has been seen as a major concern for depression in this age group. The number seems to be more with aged people living in old age homes.

There is a strong feeling of unwantedness and dejection which further leads to health deterioration. According to Brigham Young University study, loneliness is as deadly as obesity or smoking.

When this feeling arises a sudden rise in unhealthy habits increase as well. The aged group are more likely to drink in excess, smoke heavily and completely neglect the need for physical exercise. Usually the contrast is when there is social support, there is a sudden surge in good physical habits which leads to healthy body functioning.

There is also another side to this, this age group also develops fear of the unknown. They become more fearful and afraid of the future. They develop a fear to try out new things and therefore there is a resistance to do even the things they are familiar with.

Once they move out from the families into an old age home, this change can affect them deeply. They have to wade through emotions of rejection and then get used to the culture of the old age home. Once settled, they may begin to make new friends. There are good and bad aspects to this: If they get along well with the inmates it will help but otherwise it will affect their self esteem very badly.

There are ways to combat this issue of loneliness:

1. Invite the individual to be part of activities likes, like chess or card games.

2. Allow engagement towards some online activity like online games, or reading stories.

3. Host tea parties and have healthy discussions around the tea table.

4. Encouraging keeping and writing in a diary which helps a lot during old age as it keeps the mind sharp and active.

5. Talk and interact with different age groups of people.

6. Engaging them in a cause that is close to their heart.

7. Most of all – HAVE A HEALTHY ATTITUDE!

8. Counselling care is extremely important during this journey.

It helps to address issues of rejection and unwantedness. It also helps the individual to express emotions that are pent up. It allows them to express their concerns and understand how to enjoy the days of their life with joy and contentment.
