Triggers and Self-doubt

“Each time we face our fear, we gain strength, courage and confidence in the doing.” - Author Unknown Self-doubt is one of the most difficult challenges we can face in our lives. It has an impact on our daily work, personality, and life. As a result, understanding its root cause as well as its actual causes is critical. The act of comparison is the primary source of self-doubt. It could be a comparison to others, such as believing that someone is better than us and that we have no chance of becoming like that person, or it could be a comparison to the past, which could stem from traumatic experiences. A trigger is a recurrence of a previous traumatic event. This reminder might make a person feel depressed, anxious or panicked. It may also produce flashbacks in certain people. A flashback is an unexpected recurrence of a vivid, generally unfavorable memory. It can lead a person to get disoriented and "relive" a terrible incident. At any given moment of the day each of us is exposed to a multitude of external and internal experiences. External stimuli are those things going on around us. Internal stimuli are the sensations that we experience inside our bodies or minds. Both sets of experiences can set off doubt. Stimuli, whether external or internal, are simply that: stimuli. The thought or image of hurting someone may enter your mind, and you can either dismiss it as a silly intrusion or allow it to become a trigger, making you fearful that you will in fact hurt someone.

Each of us sees the world through a different lens.

Our perceptions are frequently tainted by self-doubt. At some point in our lives, we all find ourselves looking at the world through the lens of doubt. We suffer unnecessarily when our perspective is skewed by doubt. Those of us who let doubt be our filter suffer the most. The first step in removing that doubt filter is learning to recognize and label the doubt that has distorted our perspective.

As we now understand the root cause of self-doubt, we must first understand what self-doubt is really for, as it has always been with us and has helped humanity survive.

Self-doubt is beneficial in the sense that it is what our forefathers used to protect us from harm.

  1. Self-doubt assists us in assessing the situation.

  2. Self-doubt can be a powerful motivator.

  3. Self-doubt is a sign of awareness.

  4. Self-doubt Aids Us in Understanding Our Boundaries

  5. Self-doubt can help you stay on track.

There are many ways to conquer the self-doubt and triggers, some of them are:

  1. Meditate

  2. Journaling

  3. Self-analysis

  4. Beware of negative emotions

“Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.”

-William Shakespeare
